I got to spend some time fishing with Captain Savio Mizzi off Montauk, and I keep coming back to the analogy that it was a bit like opening presents on Christmas morning when at times it’s just as much fun watching someone tear through the wrapping paper as opening a gift yourself. Getting caught up in Savio’s “love of all things fishing” was, quite frankly, often as much fun as fishing myself. I was there though to catch some stripers, and, to this end, the man is a tireless fisherman. This Captain’s knowledge of the area, his connection with the water, and his in depth understanding of his client’s needs, however, is what makes him a great guide. My experience as an angler is a bit different than most others. I am a female who is fairly new to the sport, although I’ve had the great fortune to have fished for a number of different species in some fairly diverse regions. During the hours we spent on the water, SAvio made me feel like there were no questions “too dumb” to ask, while at the same time challenging me to up my game as an angler.
Oh, and did I mention that he somehow knows where all the fish are hiding? At one point we were on a pretty wild bite, with birds everywhere. Then the birds left and so did all the other guides. Savio’s boat didn’t budge.
Me: “There’s nothing on the screen.”
Savio: “Nope, nothing here. Drop your line.”
Me: (Almost instantly) “I’m in!”
Savio: “No, nothing here.” (smiling with enjoyment as he watched me unwrap the present this time).

Savio is a competent captain but alongside the successful trips, is a person who will provide you with memorable experiences you will never forget. After all, terrific stories and experiences are what fishing is all about. Believe me, if fishing is your game, match point ‘Fishooker Light Tackle Charters’ for the times and catches of your life!

I have been fishing with Savio for years. (Before he turned Pro) Savio is truly THE best light tackle inshore fisherman I have ever fished with … If you want to fish Montauk … DO NOT WAIT to book this man, it’s only a matter of time he will be booked solid.

Savio is an unique among East End guides. His knowledge of the waters and the gamefish is second to none, his enthusiasm is contagious and his approach to light tackle fishing is high energy. When you fish with him, don’t expect to be back at the dock early and do expect to learn a lot about using his favorite technique—bucktailing. His approach to clients will make you feel like you’re fishing with one of your best friends. On my fall forays with him this past year we caught and release so many stripers trying to keep count was impossible and while other boats were busy trolling we were casting with light spin, plug and fly outfits. If you want to experience light tackle fishing at its best, go with the guy who many locals on the East End consider to be the best. Go with Savio.

As a full time chapter boat captain for 25 years and 5 Time I.G.F.A. World Record Holder, I know who I would choose to fish with and that is Capt. Savio… He has a vast amount of experience fishing the waters around “The Point”, as well as tremendous fishing foresight and is an absolute master when it comes to Light Tackling. This Captain is aggressive and strives extra hard to put his clients on fish, along with great tackle combined with a safe seaworthy boat equals success!

THE BEST FISHING TRIP OF MY LIFE!
Having fished my entire life, fishing with Capt. Savio was by far, the single most exciting fishing trip of my life. We did light tackle, spin casting for striped bass this past November out of Montauk, N.Y. It was a chilly day and the sea was calm. Right outside the Montauk inlet, toward the lighthouse we started catching bass one after another. Savio was captain, 1st mate, instructor, chef and cameraman. He carefully instructed on how to cast, jig and use his rods and reels. His rods and reels were perfectly selected for the type of fishing we did. He removed every fish caught and handled every catch and release carefully. I have never seen and experienced so many fish feeding on live baits on the surface for literally miles all around the boat. The fishing was so good, catching one after another, that it became difficult to stop fishing and eat one of Savio’s delicious sandwiches.
After 3 hours, I was exhausted after catching about 60 striped bass. Most of the fish were shorts but some were keepers. My wife enjoyed cooking the bass filets that Savio cleaned and packed on ice for us to take home. I am so looking forward to my very next spring fishing trip with Capt. Savio.
